How To Completely Backup your GoDaddy Website Files

Godaddy mainly offers domain names for sale, but they are also selling hosting plans including shared hosting, VPS and dedicated server. For those who are using shared linux hosting on Godaddy, it can be a pain to backup all of your website’s files because they do not have an option for that purpose. This has been my problem too when we needed to transfer from Godaddy shared hosting to VPS – the files needed to be backed-up.

Here are two ways you can backup your Godaddy website files:

  1. Use a PHP script – The Web Hosting Hero has created a PHP script that can take care of backing up your website’s files thru your browser. It basically compresses your site into a tar.gz file for easy download. Download the script and the instructions from The Web Hosting Hero.
  2. Setup a Cron job for a Shell executable file – The PHP script above is based from this shell script from Alvin Zhang which also compresses all the files in your web server but does it through a cron job. Visit his post about it here.

By concept, these scripts should also be applicable to other linux-based hosting accounts. Hopefully this will be helpful to those who are looking for instructions how to backup their website files, whether using Godaddy hosting or other providers.

I tried it doesn’t seem to work. I just used a shell script. Decent example at http://www.fortasse.com/2010/01/tutorials/tutorial-automatic-backup-script/
